Chopped Strand Mat (CSM) is made up of chopped strands of glass fibre laid randomly and held together with a binder or stitching. Chopped Strand Mat is designed to cover a wide range of layup techniques. It easily conforms to moulds and has fast wet out properties. Chopped Stand Mat can be chemically or mechanically bound. Chopped Strand Mat.
Fiberglass (American English), or fibreglass (Commonwealth English) is a common type of fiber-reinforced plastic using glass fiber. The fibers may be randomly arranged, flattened into a sheet (called a chopped strand mat), or woven into a fabric. The plastic matrix may be a thermoset polymer matrix—most often based on thermosetting polymers such as epoxy, polyester resin, or vinylester—or a. Fiberglass.
The mat is there mainly to provide a decent bond between two layers of directional of woven cloth. With epoxy there is no bonding problem, so you just use the woven or direction right over top the previous layer. The mat will just give you some bulk – which is sometime helpful but most of the time just results in more weight for the same. Cant use epoxy resin with fiberglass mat.
How to Fiberglass Over Metal: Fiberglass consists of fiberglass mat that is saturated with a fiberglass resin. The fiberglass resin is a thick substance that needs a catalyst to harden. Fiberglass is a very durable material that will bond to almost any surface, including plastic, metal, wood and Styrofoam.
Fibreglass is combined with resin to form an extremely strong and durable composite. Fibreglass can be supplied flattened into a sheet called a strand mat, or woven into a fabric. What is Fibreglass or Fiberglass.
Do I need to use Fiberglass mat, or just Resin: Mat really has no structural strength, but it does absorb a lot of resin, so its used as a first layer in a layup of several layers. Mat then structural glass like 1708. Guessing at what you are doing, I would miter the edges of the ply 45 deg, round off the corners some, apply resin, then a lyer of mat, wet out, then a layer of 6 oz cloth to give it a clean look.
